Sonnet for John,
Valentine’s Day 2004
At the peak of summer I married you,
My partner in the cycles of the light.
In autumn, winter, spring: entwined we grew
Our roots entangling in our rest at night.
The rhythm of your heart's in time with mine
From living day by day close to its beat.
And though our separate thoughts in twoness shine,
Like buds upon a single stem, we meet.
Yet will those living bindings feel the strain
As toward the light of different suns we reach?
Though nourished by the same droplets of rain,
Will I produce a pear, and you a peach?
We daily stretch us further from the root
But equally delicious is the fruit.
